OVERVIEW

An insular world in a small system, Daegox 4 is a planetary-scale prison. Aside from its wardens, all inhabitants here are prisoners. Two hundred years ago, Daegox 4 was a wild planet, inhabited only by native flora and fauna, such as towering kaezar trees, grasslands of waving tchothein, herds of docile rimbets, predatory felrots, giant buzzing skivvlers, and the soshsurus fungal network that forms a global mesh in the planet's oceans. Then the Daegox Corporation discovered the untamed world and claimed it, quickly building prison structures on the planet's lush surface. The corporation's members are all mysterious beings who call themselves 'wardens'—humanoids with crimson skin, black eyes, nearly transparent hair, and six-fingered hands. The corporation accepts prisoners from any government or entity it judges as legitimate, for a fee. One of the planet's most remarkable features is its atmosphere: the outer layer is a thin, one-way membrane that physical objects can enter but cannot leave, and teleportation magic within it is unreliable. The atmosphere also contains spores of the world-spanning soshsurus network, which make most sapient creatures docile and uneager to commit violence—though the wardens are immune. Daegox 4 has two large continents: Control, completely covered with a sprawl of squat buildings housing millions of prisoners, and Bounty, a mostly untouched wilderness where prisoners are allowed to roam freely. While some prisoners have appointed sentences, most are lifers. The Daegox Corporation prides itself on its claim of having never allowed a successful escape, though underground groups speak of a figure known as the Wren who is said to have escaped single-handedly.

MAJOR SETTLEMENTS (5)

Checkpoint One

Built on the narrow strait linking Bounty and Control, Checkpoint One is a highly militarized stronghold constructed to repel insurrections from those confined on Control. It also processes shipments between the two continents—mostly resources and goods from Bounty to facilities on Control—and handles prisoner transfers. Though advertised as peaceful, Checkpoint One has seen a number of violent insurrections over the two centuries since its construction. Prisoners who have made it to Bounty from Control use the phrase 'I broke one' as a code phrase, while the rare escapees say they 'slipped one.'

Freedom

The oldest settlement of prisoners on Bounty, Freedom is constantly at odds with the Daegox Corporation. By the planet's laws, the corporation can punish these loosely guarded prisoners only for the most extreme crimes, such as murder or insurrection. The corporation leans heavily on Freedom and other prison colonies on Bounty for food and supplies, which are used as provisions for the millions imprisoned on Control or sold offworld. A democratically elected council leads Freedom and can petition the corporation to barter exceptional goods for requested items they can't procure themselves.

The Mountain

An imposing structure located in Bounty on the Kassilikan River, visible from miles away, the Mountain serves as the headquarters and administrative center of the Daegox Corporation, housing thousands of guards and corporate leaders. Deep in its center is a heavily guarded technomagical gate that is the only method for getting off planet. The gate connects to Skywatcher in orbit, allowing Daegox staff to travel from the surface to the ship, though some special prisoners are also processed through this method.

Sanctuary

Those who transfer to Bounty out of facilities on Control almost always seek out Sanctuary. Among prisoners on Control, Sanctuary is rumored to be a utopia—however, the reality is anything but. New arrivals are prime targets for swindlers and con jobs, often exploited and coerced into serving local gangs. Sanctuary claims to provide any vice one could want, and prisoners processed out of the hellish cells on Control sometimes stay for weeks on end, often getting into trouble and sometimes losing their lives.

Skywatcher

Orbiting Daegox 4 is a massive generational starship that serves as the receiving station for new prisoners as well as mobile administration offices. The ship is so large and flies at such a low orbit that it is visible from the planet's surface. Newcomers to Daegox 4 are issued their identification numbers and entered into the system aboard the ship. Prisoners are then placed in pods and dropped through the membrane to the facilities in which they will be housed.
