OVERVIEW

A watery world third from its star, Gaskar III consists of the crescent-shaped continent Lavnovya and an irregular ring of islands, all surrounded by the massive, storm-wracked Yulalov Ocean. Anciently, a collision with a planetoid reversed the world's rotation and knocked off ejecta that formed one of its moons. Later, a millennia-long ice age depressed much of Lavnovya's crust; as the climate warmed, the continent began slowly rising from the sea. The planet's warm climate, slow rotation, and vast ocean create enormous cloud systems and violent cyclones that batter the eastern mountains, while the western lowlands are marginally calmer and host most surface settlements. Native life is storm-hardened and abundant—kelp, ferns, arthropods, fish, amphibians, and reptiles, including giant peschkery cave centipedes and leaping ryugars. The first major humanoid settlers were vesk renunciants, self-exiles from the Veskarium who followed the teachings of the prophet Gaskar Yulalov and his visions from Weydan, god of equality. After Yulalov's execution, his followers endured generations of suppression before escaping aboard the colony ship Gaskari once Drift travel became possible. They settled this uninhabited system and built a society centered on freedom, mutual duty, and exile-forged communal survival. Though Veskarium authorities generally ignore the colony, they occasionally send contractors to retrieve fugitives, and Gaskari tolerates these incursions to preserve uneasy peace.

MAJOR SETTLEMENTS (5)

Gaskari

The planet's largest settlement, Gaskari sits in sheltered western foothills of Lavnovya's Summer's Mercy Mountains. Built around the landed colony ship of the same name, whose forward section was converted into a temple to Weydan, the city combines an orderly urban core with a more individualistic outer Sprawl. Governance is handled by an elected council with staggered five-year terms, and residents are expected to contribute to storm resilience and public welfare.

Horizon's Eye

A deep basin carved during the last ice age along western Lavnovya, Horizon's Eye is now a below-sea-level lagoon of strikingly clear water. On rare cloudless nights aligned with the system's Drift beacon, faint luminous lines shine from beneath the silt, forming vast shifting patterns visible from the air. Many interpret the phenomenon as a possible stellar map tied to Weydan, though no definitive decipherment exists.

Iortin

The narrow, volcanically active Iortin archipelago hosts hidden harbors, secret pads, and criminal enclaves favored by smugglers taking advantage of Gaskar III's storms and cloud cover. Gaskari authorities periodically commission mercenary sweeps when local threats escalate, but the peace is temporary and new outlaw groups soon return. The disgraced Free Captain Qhuomiz is among recent arrivals, increasing fears of a larger Free Captain clash.

Prozbyra

The largest island of Lavnovya's ring, storm-lashed Prozbyra is a jagged subcontinental landmass known for dangerous wildlife and rapidly growing cliffside tourism. Utesras ("cliff anglers") are especially notorious for electrically stunning prey with dorsal stalks. Adventure tourism has sparked political friction in Gaskari between those who welcome travel and wonder, and those who view commercialization as a threat to Gaskar III's identity as a spiritual refuge for exiles.

Tyamov

Tyamov is a town-sized underwater station on Lavnovya's continental shelf above the Pripast Abyss, a deep crater rich in life around volcanic vents. Massive ryugars and stranger elemental-crystalline organisms prowl its chemically turbulent waters. Scientists aim to deploy next-generation submersibles to document the abyss, but hazardous ejecta, equipment interference, and persistent rumors of far worse creatures in the crevices keep most expeditions on hold.
