OVERVIEW

Pakahano is a volcanically active world featuring the fertile Tarpak megaocean with hundreds of tropical islands, a large continental landmass called the Lavalands, and two small moons. Its primary inhabitants are two plantlike peoples: menei, peaceful floral illusionists living on the Lavalands' stable coasts and larger Tarpak islands; and tammans, tempestuous treelike folk roaming the Tarpak in advanced seafaring fleets, exploring and colonizing according to capricious whims. The world is best known as the source of pokanates, psychoactive crystals that reflect holders' thoughts and desires. In small quantities, pokanates pleasingly amplify or soothe moods; in large quantities they can support huge psychically fueled illusory cities, impose dreamlike states on entire populations, and fuel massive industries centered on anticipating workers' needs. Menei use pokanates for various purposes, while tammans use them to power peaceful expansionism. In recent decades, offworlders—especially AbadarCorp—have flocked to seek fortune, transforming Pakahano into a tourist, scientific, and corporate destination with new spas, resorts, festivals, and research stations. These developments have sparked political conflicts as menei and tammans experience significant lifestyle disruptions. Complicating matters further, rampant pokanate use appears to be warming the climate, causing devastating cyclones that disrupt tamman seafaring and endanger menei coastal cities. Warmer weather has also prompted keenags—avian people once confined to the Lavalands' hottest reaches—to claim islands and coastlines traditionally belonging to menei. Keenags have developed voracious appetites for pokanates and often steal large quantities, throwing themselves into further conflict with menei who have relied on mining and selling pokanates for generations. The planet has no centralized government; disputes are traditionally negotiated until compromises are reached.

MAJOR SETTLEMENTS (4)

City of Veils

One of Pakahano's main tourist attractions, this sprawling metropolis-resort is essentially a theme park for urban industrialists, offering layers of pokanates-fueled illusions where visitors build their own virtual cities exactly as their hearts desire. Managed by Urbomancy Inc., an AbadarCorp subsidiary, the park caters to ultrarich clientele with packages like Quaint Villa, Bustling Industrialist, and Urban Chic. Customers create temporary or permanent illusory cities complete with illusory staff and residents, and can charge other tourists for entry—with Urbomancy taking a healthy share. For 3 days each month, the entire city shuts down for maintenance, technician retuning of pokanates, and behind-the-scenes tours.

Deep Vents

Deep in the Tarpak ocean, hydrothermal vents discharge superheated water through fissures in the ocean floor. Incredibly diverse and full of ocean life, these vents birth enormous blind sharks that keenags consider wonderful delicacies, though the sharks find keenags equally delectable. Giant sponges and anemones—as lovely as they are poisonous—also thrive here. Near the vents are ruins of a strange underwater city predating the Gap, full of intact domes, tiled mosaics, and bizarre automatons that guard the grounds. Frescoes depict incredible technologies and a plantlike species unrelated to menei or tammans. Smaller planetside corporations seek adventurers to explore the depths for answers and potentially enormous profits.

Hano

The largest city in the Lavalands, Hano is a lush settlement filled with greenhouses and sparkling volcanic glass towers. This cosmopolitan city is full of menei and tammans who take pride in its diversity and welcome newcomers into Hano University—provided they pass strict entrance exams. Competition is fierce partly because it is the only university engaging in cutting-edge pokanates research. Hano also houses abundant geothermal energy and rich mineral deposits. Tammans have built factories manufacturing everything from UPBs to flame-resistant equipment to starship parts. Another major industry is lavaracer construction—vehicles designed to ride safely on the Lavalands' numerous active lava flows.

The Jungle of Elders

Nestled deep within the Lavalands interior, the Jungle of Elders is a primeval habitat where xenobiologists believe keenags originated. Pockets of these avian people still live in obscurity here alongside all manner of hot-blooded magical creatures and sentient plants. Pakahano legend tells of ancient times when the jungle's trees themselves were sentient, slumbering until intruders threatened native inhabitants, then awakening to slaughter explorers from on- and offworld alike. Some zealots believe the trees could be awakened again and set against industrialists who have settled on Pakahano. The most rabid of these cultists live here in cabals, performing strange rituals to bring their bloody visions to life.
