OVERVIEW

Pabaq drifts slowly around its bright-yellow sun in an annual cycle nearly twice as long as Absalom Station's. The planet's land surface is covered in greenery, from muggy rain forests and treacherous marshlands to tropical coastlines where 300-foot-tall trees stretch skyward. Six major continents feature distinct biomes: Zhast, with large populations of saltwater gengen osharu; the largely unexplored desert of Demwiq; the sparsely populated ice caps Nalfant and Avar dotted with remote research compounds; Rawara, with rolling plains, taigas, and the towering Rivali Peaks; and Jenikar, a landlocked verdant continent of rain forests and swamps that is the most populous and home to capital city Jhavom. The planet's sole sapient species, sluglike osharus, are notoriously cautious due to their weak physical constitution. Despite pervasive timidity, they are adamant in their shared objective to gather as much knowledge as possible, conquering fears to tame unforgiving wilds and establish thousands of university-like settlements. Major cities are protected by armies of mobile AI-controlled drones programmed with pacifistic defenses that tranquilize dangerous beasts and transport them far away, while air-defense systems guard against airborne attacks. Most osharu settlements are near aquatic areas—on freshwater riverbanks and lakes, with ocean-dwelling gengens favoring saltwater coasts. Wilderness outside protected cities is harsh: long unforgiving seasons, frequent storms, and dangerous fauna like the jungle-stalking ganatra, vicious mammalian predators whose camouflage makes them nearly invisible. In Jhavom's center stands the Hall of Records, a 180-story skyscraper housing all information collected by osharus. Near its top, the Grand Council—six elected osharus permanently wired into complex computer networks—exist in virtual-reality comas, processing unimaginable data influxes that many believe are blessings from Yaraesa.

MAJOR SETTLEMENTS (6)

Dig Site J-49b

The most talked-about natural mystery discovered on Pabaq in recent years lies at the heart of Demwiq's desert landscape. A massive sandstorm revealed a wide metal surface with a half-mile-wide glass viewport showing a gargantuan humanoid skeleton in a tattered flight suit strapped to a crash couch. Archaeologists believe a titanic extraterrestrial spacecraft or escape pod lies beneath the sands. Recent attempts to breach the glass have been stymied by an infrasound rumble of unknown origin that has driven some scholars to flee and caused others to disappear into the desert.

Fortune Reef

The largest coastal settlement on Pabaq, this glistening glass city hugs the clear saltwater oceans off the coast of Zhast, stretching along iridescent black-sand coast for over 5 miles. Fortune Reef is home to most of Pabaq's saltwater gengen osharus, who can swim freely in placid oceans and have established a nearby underwater marine-biology compound.

Jhavom

Pabaq's capital and largest university-city, founded before the Gap. This massive bubble-city in landlocked rainforest continent Jenikar features a fascinating mix of millennia-old brick-and-stone buildings juxtaposed with gleaming crystalline skyscrapers. Being the largest settlement, it is also the most educationally diverse, with facilities for nearly every field of study. It hosts the planet's largest temple of Yaraesa, the Glory in Knowledge Museum, which functions as both worship center and storage for important discoveries.

Laharoun

The river Laharoun runs from the Rivali Peaks in Rawara through Jenikar, eventually emptying into the ocean off southwestern Demwiq. Its fresh waters maintain the desert settlement of Oasis and are a source of great magical energy fluxes. Every spring, powerful surges in the river's innate magical emanations cause bizarre mutations in local flora and fauna. Many believe the cause lies in the river's source in the Rivali Peaks, but expeditions report the headwaters somehow evade detection.

The Mire

Some osharus reject their communal society and venture into wilderness. The largest such settlement is the Mire, a community of over 1,000 osharus—monster hunters, merchants, farmers—built along descending walls of a humongous crevice deep in Jenikar's rain forests, safe from most predators above. In recent years, it has been plagued by attacks from a mythical monster called the Behemoth, described as a mutant ganatra five times normal size with a mouth for a head and far too many limbs. Hunters have called for help from monster hunters across the galaxy.

Oasis

Located on the banks of the Laharoun at the western edge of Demwiq, Oasis is the gateway city to that vast desert continent. The few osharus wishing to explore Demwiq's dunes begin here, readying supplies and preparing for unpleasant journeys into dry heat. Most permanent residents work as outfitters. A sophisticated array of fans and humidifiers maintains the enclosed Grove—a bog-like park where osharus can relax comfortably. The Grove also contains a small monument to those osharus who entered the desert never to return.
